ADVANCED MOTORCYCLING – SAFER, BETTER and MORE FUN.

The IAM Skill for Life (SFL) programme will make you a better, safer and more progressive rider. You must be a full licence holder. The programme consists of anything from 4 to 10 sessions with an IAM observer. Each session lasts from 2 to 4 hours. Sessions are based on riding, discussion and theory, demonstrations and practice and are arranged on a day and at a time to suit you.

The SFL programme is usually completed over a couple of months and unlike advanced 'day' or 'half day' training sessions ensures that your 'better riding' techniques become instinctive and natural.

On completion of the programme and to guarantee the standards of your rider development, you can take the IAM Advanced Motorcycle test which is carried out by a (serving or retired) Police Class 1 Advanced Rider.

STILL NOT SURE? Try a free Assessment Ride. Just contact our Chief Observer and we will arrange a free assessment 1 hour session consisting of an observed ride and feedback.

WHY IS THE IAM BETTER? We are all enthusiasts who are interested in developing your road riding skills. Because of this you get lots of guidance, advice and riding for relatively little cost. The size and distribution of the IAM also ensures flexibility in the provision of the Skills for Life programme. Our standards are guaranteed by the IAM test.

NOT JUST THE 'SKILL FOR LIFE' PROGRAMME. When you have successfully completed the Skill for Life programme you can, if you want, join WHAM! as a full member and take part in the regular activities of the WHAM! club. These include track days, slow riding days, refresher training, evening 'natter' nights, weekend tours and a Sunday morning ride every week! To see some of our activities look at the programme page.

What is Advanced Motorcycling ?

Advanced motorcycling is the ability to control the position and speed of the machine safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to make reasonable progress unobtrusively, with skill and responsibility.

This skill requires a positive but courteous attitude and a high standard of riding competence based on concentration, effective all-round observation, anticipation and planning.  All this must be co-coordinated with good machine handling skills.  The motorcycle will always be at the right place on the road at the right time, travelling at the right speed, with the correct gear engaged and can always be stopped safely in the distance the rider can see is clear.

Please do drop by at one of our regular meets on a 'first-Sunday-of-the-month' morning at one of the following locations for an informal chat and/or to join us on one of our rides:-
